Khaz is a notation system of ancient Armenian musical neumes used to transcribe religious Armenian music since the 8th century. This has since been replaced by Hamparsum notation and later Western musical notation. Scholars have studied Khaz but it’s incredibly difficult to figure out what’s right, and what’s not, because monks and priests don’t agree on how to read then, and therefore rely on their own individual oral traditions to pass these sounds forward. The notion that interpretations are left up to the communities, and individuals, and that there really is ‘not right’ way of interpreting these figures is what attracted me to learn more about Khaz in the first place. This is one of my attempts to create some visual scores trying to make sense of these notations, and sounds, on a sheet of paper. More will come.
